Victims' Privacy Rights In Astronaut Case (3-7-07)

She went from this:

To this mug shot because of jealousy:

Side bar: Is it just me or does astronaut Bill Ofelein look like the late actor Dan Hartman in that top pic.

I read an article today about Lisa Nowak, 43, the astronaut under indictment for assaulting and attempting to kidnap a love rival, Colleen Shipman, 30, and I found it a bit perplexing.

I know the feds need evidence and all, but some of this stuff, Bill Ofelein's personal emails to Shipman that Nowak illegally accessed and printed off, for privacy reasons, should have been sealed.

Yet, there they were, front and center in the news for all to read, victimizing Shipman all over again and my guess is, probably embarrassing the astronaut too.

Cause you know, when someone pretty much says they want to do things of a graphic sexual nature to you, I'm pretty sure they don't want it to be made public information.

Colleen Shipman - yea, she pretty much almost got Jeffrey Dahmered.

Colleen Shipman has been victimized already by Nowak and Ofelein really didn’t do anything. This was all a matter of Nowak not wanting to let go of someone who had moved on.

Therefore, why should their private business, their intimate emails, that are a bit racy, be made public, for all to read, because someone else broke the law and invaded their privacy.

They have rights under the law and one of those rights is privacy.

Lisa Nowak: Watch it or you're next:

This case perplexes me for another reason. As the phrase goes, there are other fish in the sea. Why is it some react to break ups this way. It has to be a psychological fault in some that they would wish to kill someone.

As a singer/writer, the most I think I could ever do is write a really messed up song about you, that when it would play, it would leave your friends struggling to holding in the laughter upon which they would say, “dude, I think she’s talking about you.”

I don’t understand how some women and men let their emotions take over to such extremes that kidnapping and or murder becomes an option. No one is worth you doing that.

Ok, yea, the astronaut is cute and all, but I repeat, no one is worth you doing that. And furthermore, I'm going to have to call the fashion police on him over that tie.

NASA fires troubled astronaut

Wed Mar 7, 2007 9:42 PM GMT20

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Astronaut Lisa Nowak was fired by NASA on Wednesday, little more than a month after she was arrested on charges that she tried to kidnap a woman she regarded as romantic rival for the affections of a space shuttle pilot.

NASA said the decision to terminate Nowak from the astronaut corps was by "mutual agreement" between the space agency and the Navy, where she is still an active duty officer.

The bizarre incident that led to Nowak's arrest on February 6 so stunned NASA that it announced it would review its screening process for the highly competitive and prestigious astronaut program.

NASA said it "lacks the administrative means to deal appropriately with the criminal charges pending against Nowak" and that her next assignment would come from the Navy, which had assigned her to the space agency.

A spokeswoman for Nowak, Cari Brunelle, said NASA's decision "was anticipated."

Nowak, 43, a Navy captain who became an astronaut in 1996 and flew just one space shuttle mission in July, was placed on leave after she was arrested last month in Orlando Florida. She was accused of assaulting and trying to kidnap Air Force Capt. Colleen Shipman, whom she viewed as a rival for the affections of astronaut William Oefelein, a commander in the Navy.

Police said Nowak, a mother of three, drove from Houston to Orlando, wearing adult diapers to avoid a bathroom stop, to confront Shipman after she learned she was seeing Oefelein.

Nowak disguised herself in a wig and trench coat and allegedly followed Shipman to her parked car at Orlando airport. She carried a bag that contained a BB gun, knife and a rubber hose, police said.

According to Shipman, Nowak accosted her as she got into her car, tried to open the door and sprayed pepper spray through the partially open window.

Nowak was first charged with attempted murder, but that charge was reduced to attempted kidnapping last week. She has pleaded not guilty to that and other charges, including burglary and battery with a weapon.
