Music Executive Clive Davis Has Died Leaving A Mixed Legacy

Music mogul and attorney, Clive Davis, has died of respiratory failure. He was 94-years-old. Davis was head of Columbia Records, then formed his own label Arista in conjunction with Sony and later BMG, after being hit with tax evasion charges and allegations of embezzling company funds.

Davis was later replaced at his own label, by his protégé, Antonio "L.A." Reid in what many in the industry saw as a stab in the back. Davis later regrouped and started J Records. Davis also continued to work for Sony Music as an advisor.

Davis has been accused of having a proclivity for young guys, such as Usher, when he was a teen. Some in the industry have accused Davis of grooming disgraced hip hop mogul, Sean "Diddy" Combs, who was put on trial for sex trafficking and convicted of engaging in prostitution (paying for sex trafficking).

Davis is credited with discovering artists such as Whitney Houston, Bob Dylan and Janis Joplin, among others. He definitely had an ear for music. However, he often did not pay his artist well (TLC Held Clive Davis At Gunpoint).

Davis also looked the other way to serious problems with his recording artists, some of whom died, such as Whitney Houston, Janis Joplin, and Rob Pilatus of Milli Vanilli (Why Have So Many Of Clive Davis Music Artists Met With An Early And Tragic Demise).

Davis knew Houston had terrible drug problems but looked the other way to it (I had sounded the alarm regarding Houston a year before she died: Whitney Houston On The Brink). Houston took drugs in failed attempts at trying to escape sexual abuse she experienced as a child, when she would have benefited more from therapy. Drugs will never fix those types of emotional wounds. Working with a therapist and most of all prayer for healing can make an enormous difference. Houston's bad marriage to R&B singer, Bobby Brown, also worsened her addictions, as he too was a drug addict and alcoholic. Brown was also molested as a child.

Davis knew Janis Joplin was a massive drug addict and alcoholic. However, not wanting to upset his star by demanding rehab, Davis left Joplin to her own devices and she overdosed and died. Joplin's promising life was cut very short by her addictions.

Davis knew the handsome, photogenic German duo, Milli Vanilli were lip syncing on their albums, but due to the fact it was making so much money, he kept silent. I guess he assumed because their deceitful producer Frank Farian had gotten away with it via his previous hit group, Boney M, it would be the same with Milli Vanilli. However, it was not so.

The 1990s television show "In Living Color" did a skit exposing the group as lip-syncers. Then, shortly after the backing track glitched while they were performing in concert and it gave the game away. When the story burst they were not actually singing on their records, the duo went into a depression.

Not long after Pilatus became a full on drug addict and drank himself to death, unable to cope with the shame and public criticism stemming from lip syncing in Milli Vanilli (it wasn't worth his life). Ironically today, so many singers are chosen for their looks, can't sing and spend their time on stage lip syncing. It is part of the reason why music sales are in the toilet
